Buy structural, forever pieces — beds, dining sets, sofas, wardrobes — from workshops that build in solid local hardwood, because those pieces must survive the climate and carry weight for decades. Buy commodity items — plastic chairs, metal shelving, mattresses — from big retail, where imports genuinely win. Buy nothing structural unseen from classifieds without inspecting joints in person.
The five demands that guarantee quality
Wherever you buy: (1) named species — "odum", "teak", "mahogany", not "wood"; (2) kiln-dried, and they can say where; (3) a written spec and price — like published prices; (4) a warranty in writing; (5) a physical workshop or service address you can walk into. Any seller who fails two of the five is selling you a problem.
