A Ghanaian living room works harder than most: it hosts family Sundays, receives guests formally, survives harmattan dust and rainy-season humidity, and looks good doing it. Ideas that consistently work:
Anchor with wood, soften with linen
An exposed hardwood frame sofa like the Bosomtwe gives the room structure and survives real use; linen upholstery breathes in the heat where leather and velvet swelter. Terracotta and forest-green textiles warm it without fighting the wood.
Let cane do the cooling
Woven cane — an accent chair like the Sirigu, or the cane doors of the Axim console — adds texture and literally breathes. It's the most Ghanaian design move there is, and the world is currently copying it.
One big center table beats three small ones
A generous solid table like the Akosombo handles drinks, board games and feet. Add a nest of side tables that tuck away when the room fills for a funeral gathering or a football final.
Plan for the visitors you actually get
Ghanaian living rooms host crowds. Benches, stools and floor cushions that stack or slide under things expand seating without permanently crowding the floor. And leave walking room: 45 cm between sofa and table, 90 cm on main routes.
