Is Odum Wood Good for Furniture? An Honest Answer

5 July 2026 · Efua Mensah · Wood guide

Short answer: yes — odum is one of the best furniture timbers in West Africa, and we bet our name on it. The longer answer is worth two minutes, because "odum" is also one of the most faked labels in Ghana's timber markets.

What odum actually is

Odum is the Akan name for iroko (Milicia excelsa), a tall hardwood found across West and Central Africa. In Akan tradition the odum tree is treated with respect — it is said to house spirits, and it is not felled carelessly. Our founder Daniel Kwaku Mensah put it more practically: "If it's worth building, it's worth building in odum."

Why it's good for furniture

  • Termite and rot resistance. Odum's natural extractives make it genuinely termite-resistant without chemical treatment — in Ghana, that is not a luxury.
  • Stability in our climate. Properly dried odum moves very little between harmattan and rainy season. Tabletops stay flat; doors keep closing.
  • Strength where it counts. It holds pegged and dovetailed joints for decades — the church pews we built in 1999 are still in weekly service.
  • It ages beautifully. Fresh odum is golden; ten-year-old odum is deep amber. It is furniture that improves in your house.

The catch: drying and honesty

Odum punishes impatience. Cut it before it's fully dried and it will check and twist — which is why every odum board in our yard rests in the kiln and then the seasoning stack before touching a saw. And because odum commands a premium, plenty of "odum" furniture in the market is wawa underneath with an odum-coloured stain. Ask to see the end grain; real odum is dense, interlocked and heavy in the hand.

What we build in it

Our Elmina dining set, the Akosombo coffee table and the Navrongo platform bed are all solid odum — no veneer, no substitutions. Browse all our dining sets and center tables, or visit the Spintex showroom and lift a corner; the weight tells the story.
